Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

I found each session of MLD to be a relaxing experience and was very aware of the immediate effect it was having throughout my body. I had gone for sinus relief and noticed that my sinuses had improved greatly after each session, steadily returning to normal. Since the three sessions with Astrid I have had no sinus pain at all and the usual triggers no longer aggravate my sinuses. It is so good to be clear headed again – thank you.

~ Gemma, Akana client

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was founded by Dr Emil and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s. It has been described as ‘one of the best kept secrets on the health and beauty scene’. Its light touch and intensely relaxing effect mask its strength.

Specific, gentle and rhythmical movements of the skin stimulate the lymphatic system (the body’s waste disposal system), increasing lymphatic circulation to up to 100 times. The effect of a treatment lasts for up to six hours.

MLD is both preventative and remedial. Benefits include:

  • An excellent option to detoxify, reduce cellulite and fluid retention. Has a tonic effect on internal peristalsis, which in turn aids digestion. Helps boost a sluggish immune system, e.g. shift a lingering infection. Dr Vodder recommended that a healthy person have a course of up to ten MLD treatments a year.
  • Rejuvenating facials clean and clear the skin, improve skin conditions and reduce puffiness around the eyes. MLD counteracts the signs of ageing – another option for natural ‘face lift’!
  • Removal of excess fluid and waste. Recommended to people with low activity, those standing on their feet all day, or to pregnant women. Balances the body and its hormones before, during and after pregnancy – adding nothing toxic. Leading fertility expert Zita West recommends MLD.
  • Speeds up healing of burns and scars. A facelift patient in France is given a prescription for 30 daily MLD treatments to reduce swelling and bruising, and speed healing. The appearance of old scars and stretch marks can be improved.
  • Promotes the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains.
  • Can positively affect migraine, arthritic problems, eye and ear problems (‘glue ear’ in children) and congested sinus.
  • The effects of MLD on the nervous system make it one of the most relaxing treatments. Perfect for stress and pain control and to improve quality of sleep.

Visit the MLD UK website for more information. You will find mini guides, on how MLD will support, for example, detox, the treatment of swollen ankles in pregnancy, or healing after cosmetic surgery.

MLD is safe, with very few contraindications. Usually a course of treatments is recommended, in which the first sessions should be closer to each other, then gradually spacing out. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
